Globe with shagreen case

Balmer and Newton. 1783. Shagreen (fish skin) paper, plaster. Inv. no.: D.80.2.334

This globe is a travel accessory representing the world as it was known in the late 18th century. It is contained in a sharkskin case the interior of which is decorated with a celestial vault, representing the constellations.

English in origin, it bears the title "New terrestrial globe", as the map of the world had been modified in the light of the recent discovery of Oceania.
